Closing down the SwirrlWiki service at the end of November
Due to the growing success of the Linked Data aspect of our business (based around our PublishMyData platform) we’ve made the difficult decision to shut down our SwirrlWiki service at the end of November. We only have limited resources here at Swirrl, and it’s important for us to be able to focus on the right things.
Although we still think it’s a pretty good wiki product, SwirrlWiki hasn’t been very profitable for us, and although the running costs aren’t very high, our main concern is that we can’t put enough time in to maintain the system properly, which could eventually start putting users’ data at risk.
So, from the 1st of December 2011, all accounts and data will become unavailable. On request, we can send you an export of all the items from your wiki, along with any files you have uploaded, bundled up into a zip file. Just drop us an email at support@swirrl.com if you would like us to do that for you, or if you have other questions about extracting your information.
We appreciate that some of you have put significant effort into creating content on your SwirrlWiki and that you will now have extra work to select a new service and copy your material to it. We’re really sorry for causing you that hassle, but it just doesn’t make economic sense for us to keep running. We hope you enjoyed using SwirrlWiki.
We’ll continue to post articles on this blog about the projects we’re working on.
